A concrete admixture is added to the mix to control a specific property of fresh or hardening concrete — workability, setting time, or resistance to freezing — without changing the basic cement–aggregate–water design. A superplasticizer improves workability at a lower water content; an antifreeze protects fresh concrete's hydration process when placed at sub-zero temperatures, allowing winter concreting to continue safely. Construction, civil-engineering, and precast-concrete projects use this function to keep concrete performing consistently across the range of weather and handling conditions a real job site presents.
