A flocculant gathers fine suspended particles into larger clusters so they settle out of water quickly, clarifying industrial and mining wastewater and recovering raw material that would otherwise be lost. A flotation depressant works the opposite side of the same separation problem: it keeps an unwanted mineral from floating to the surface during flotation, so the wanted mineral is recovered on its own with less chemical use. These two functions are how mining, water treatment, and ceramic-wastewater operations separate what they need to keep from what they must discharge.
