This function reduces friction wherever a formed body must separate cleanly from a mold, die, or pressing tool. A mold lubricant coats glass molds so bottles and glassware release without sticking or marking; a mold-release agent does the same for plaster molds in sanitaryware and tableware casting, extending mold life; a pressing aid reduces friction between granules and tooling during dry pressing and extrusion, so ceramic, refractory, and catalyst bodies release with less wear on the equipment. All three protect surface finish as much as the tool that shapes it.
