Setting Modifiers

A setting modifier speeds up or slows down how quickly a cement- or castable-based mix begins to harden, without changing its final strength. An accelerator shortens setting time so concrete can be placed safely in cold weather or a refractory repair can return to service sooner; a retarder extends the working time of a large concrete pour or refractory castable so it can be fully placed and finished before it sets. Construction, precast concrete, and refractory teams use these modifiers to fit the chemistry to the job's real schedule.
